Chapter 10 - Finding Our Way

“Okay, so that could have gone better,” Eddy admitted, brushing himself off as car headlights passed in a blur on I-95 as we stood on a grassy hill on the western side of the highway.

“Better? No more flying at night! We flew into that airport’s flight pattern,” Carrie retorted.

“Well, Tease made the pilots forget they ever saw us,” I said.

“Fin, that’s so much better?” Carrie glared. “I stared right into the cockpit as that plane ascended right toward us!”

“Well, it could have been worse,” Tease said. “If their radar could track us they would have sent up a fighter jet or two to check us out and, well, might have fired at us.”

“But you would have shadowed their minds,” I said, reassuringly.

They looked at me, thoughts hooded.

“His gravity bubble would have shielded us if they fired,” I added.

The looks that earned me as their thoughts absolutely blanked made me stare back. “Eddy, you would have,” I told him. “You just have to believe it works—and draw on my gift.”

“Um, that might work—” Eddy admitted, half-heartedly.

“Or might not, and we’d all be dead,” Carrie finished.

“Carrie…” Tease said.

“Yes, we can fly,” Eddy said, “well, sorta fly, But, Fin, we’re not Primes. Though, together, we’re equivalent to one.”

“We more than that,” I said, knowing he looked at me like a fool kid, not the woman I was—not the woman who loved him.

He winced, glancing at Carrie, my girlfriend. I shook my head, his girlfriend… Damn, we were still so enmeshed at the moment.

Yes, we are, he thought back as Carrie met my gaze.

“Fin,” she said, “look at yourself. You’re exhausted…”

“I’m fine,” I answered, trying not to gasp for breath.

“Look through my eyes—” Tease said, mentally reaching out.

I found myself seeing myself standing there, a too skinny blonde haired barefoot girl in a black bikini sheened in sweat, hair dripping, steam rising off my body. “So, you see me as a skinny kid.”

Tease closed her eyes still looking at me—I saw myself as a dimly glowing swirling aura, not that of a child—but who I was… but more. Who we were.

I turned my head, opening my eyes, seeing Carrie, in a black skirt, boots, and black bra rummage through her backpack for her blouse. Closing my eyes—Tease’s eyes, I saw Carrie’s aura close around her, flecked with the colors I knew were mine. Eyes still closed, I turned my heard toward Eddy, knowing instinctively where he was—the pull of his presence both reassuring and, in some odd way, terrifying. His aura matched mine, pulling slightly toward me—Tease, I reminded me firmly.

I stood there on the left, motionless. His aura swirling identical to mine, calling to me with every fiber of his being. How I wished I weren’t a child—realized I wasn’t.

His aura extended to me—

I shivered as Eddy grasped Tease’s hand. I was myself again, breathing hard, staring at them... confused.

“You feeling better?” Eddy asked softly.

I blinked. “A lot.” All things being equal, I really was.

“So, he’s tapped you enough that you should feel more, well, yourself for a while,” Tease said.
